The Steepest Drop of the SeasonNajgłębszy Spadek Sezonu

Alior Bank posted a net profit of PLN 770 million for the first half of 2026, down 31 percent from PLN 1.12 billion a year earlier. The second quarter was harder still, with net profit of PLN 367 million, down almost 43 percent year on year. Among the Polish banks reporting this season, that is the steepest fall, and after the tax-driven declines at Pekao, Erste and ING and the franc-driven records at Millennium and mBank, Alior stands out for how much landed on it at once. The one comfort for the market is that it was expected: the result came in almost exactly on the analyst consensus.

Three Headwinds, Not OneTrzy Przeciwności, Nie Jedna

Most Polish banks this season had a single dominant story. Alior had three at once, plus the rate cycle. The largest was a one-off legal hit: a European Court of Justice ruling on 23 April 2026 forced the bank to book a PLN 153 million correction to its interest income in the second quarter, which alone cut net profit by about PLN 97 million. On top of that, credit-risk costs rose by PLN 98 million year on year, lifting the cost-of-risk ratio to 0.71 percent from 0.49 percent, in line with the bank's own earlier guidance. And like every peer, Alior absorbed a much higher effective tax rate after the corporate levy on banks was raised to 30 percent. Falling market rates did the rest, pushing net interest income down almost 13 percent in the quarter. Do tego koszty ryzyka kredytowego wzrosły o 98 milionów złotych rok do roku, podnosząc wskaźnik kosztów ryzyka do 0,71 procent z 0,49 procent, zgodnie z wcześniejszymi zapowiedziami banku.

The European court ruling is worth understanding, because it hit Alior harder than most. It concerned charges on consumer loans, and Alior runs a comparatively consumer-heavy, high-margin book. The same higher-yield lending that gives Alior one of the highest net interest margins in the sector, around 5.2 percent, is exactly what left it more exposed when the court changed the rules on consumer-credit income.

A tax hike, an EU court ruling, and rising credit costs, all in one half. Where its peers each faced one headwind, Alior faced the set. Podwyżka podatku, wyrok unijnego trybunału i rosnące koszty ryzyka, wszystko w jednym półroczu. Tam gdzie konkurenci mierzyli się z jedną przeciwnością, Alior stanął naprzeciw całego zestawu.

Less Bad Than It LooksMniej Źle, Niż Wygląda

Strip out the one-off court ruling and the picture is far healthier. On an adjusted basis, the bank's second-quarter return on equity was about 14.3 percent, rather than the 11.5 percent it reported, still a solid, double-digit return. The parts of the business Alior actually controls held up well. Fee and commission income rose 8 percent to PLN 241 million, helped by insurance sales and brokerage activity, and beat forecasts. Total costs were essentially flat at PLN 551 million, a sign of real discipline while revenue was under pressure. The bank also collected a PLN 40 million dividend from the operator of the BLIK payment system in the quarter. Wynik z opłat i prowizji wzrósł o 8 procent do 241 milionów złotych, wsparty sprzedażą ubezpieczeń i działalnością maklerską, i pobił prognozy. Koszty całkowite były zasadniczo płaskie na poziomie 551 milionów złotych, znak realnej dyscypliny, gdy przychody były pod presją. Bank zainkasował też w kwartale 40 milionów złotych dywidendy od operatora systemu płatności BLIK.

Still Growing UnderneathWciąż Rosnący Pod Spodem

The franchise kept expanding through the noise. Mortgage sales rose to PLN 25.2 billion, up PLN 1.1 billion on the first quarter, and while consumer-loan sales eased slightly, the bank kept acquiring customers: relationship clients climbed to 1.75 million, up 20,000 in the quarter, and it opened 48,200 new accounts, more than in the first quarter. This is not a bank in retreat. It is a high-margin, consumer-focused lender that ran into a quarter where a tax change, a court ruling and a turn in the credit cycle all arrived together. Franczyza dalej się rozwijała przez ten szum. Sprzedaż kredytów hipotecznych wzrosła do 25,2 miliarda złotych, o 1,1 miliarda więcej niż w pierwszym kwartale, a choć sprzedaż kredytów konsumenckich lekko osłabła, bank dalej pozyskiwał klientów: liczba klientów relacyjnych wzrosła do 1,75 miliona, o 20 tysięcy w kwartale, a bank otworzył 48 200 nowych rachunków, więcej niż w pierwszym kwartale.

The PZU QuestionPytanie o PZU

One structural point sits over Alior that does not apply to most of its peers: ownership. Alior is controlled by the PZU Group, Poland's largest insurer, which also holds the controlling stake in Bank Pekao. That puts Alior inside the wider reshaping of Poland's state-linked financial sector, where questions about how the two PZU-controlled banks fit together, and how capital and dividends flow up to the insurer and ultimately the state, form a strategic backdrop to every set of results. For Alior specifically, it means the numbers are only part of the story; the ownership structure is the other part.

The Same Story, Told in Its Harshest VersionTa Sama Historia, w Najostrzejszej Wersji

Alior is the sixth Polish bank in this series, and it tells the same underlying story in its harshest form. Across the sector two forces have dominated 2026: the receding Swiss-franc legacy lifting profit at Millennium and mBank, and a set of external drags, the 30 percent tax above all, suppressing it at Pekao, Erste and ING. Alior sits firmly on the drag side, and simply caught more of the drags at once, adding a one-off EU court ruling and a rising credit-cost cycle to the tax and the rate squeeze. Yet the tell is the same as everywhere else: adjust for the one-off and the return on equity is back near 14 percent, fees are growing, costs are flat and customers are still arriving. The reported number went backwards; the bank did not. What Alior adds to the sector picture is a reminder that beneath uniformly strong Polish banks, the reported results in 2026 are being written by forces largely outside the banks' control, tax, courts, and the rate cycle, and that a higher-margin, consumer-tilted lender like Alior feels those forces more sharply than most. Its PZU ownership adds a strategic layer the others lack. For investors, Alior is the higher-beta expression of the Polish banking story, more sensitive to shocks on the way down and, by the same logic, on the way back up. This note is analysis, not investment advice. Alior's own results and financial statements, linked below, hold the primary figures.
